Dallas Cowboys Daily Blitz - 9/15/21 - Getting To Know The Enemy: L.A. Chargers

The Dallas Cowboys showed they can dance with the big boys last Thursday when they suffered a heartbreak of a loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the last minute of the game. The Cowboys now travel to the other side of the country to Los Angeles, California and SoFi Stadium to face the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday, Sept. 19, at 3:25 p.m. CT. What went right for Dallas in the opening day loss? Starting quarterback Dak Prescott played well, the offensive line showed they've got something for opposing defenses in 2021 and running back Ezekiel Elliott appears to have recovered from his abysmal 2020 season. Elliott didn't show it on the stat sheet, as the Cowboys' rushing attack was stymied by the Buccaneers' defense, but Elliott did make the most of the few holes he had and blocked well picking up blitzes. What can the Cowboys expect from the Chargers in week 2? They're coming off a 20-16 win over Cowboys' division opponent Washington, in a game where Chargers' starting quarterback Justin Herbert passed for 337 yards and went 31-for-47 with one touchdown and one interception. This was against a Washington defense that's supposed to be one of the best in the league. But Los Angeles was able to move the ball seemingly at will against that defense and dominate the time of possession 36:03 - 23:57. The Cowboys' defense will have their hands full while the offense may have difficulty moving the ball on the ground once again. Let's discuss! The Cowboys should be operating with the intention of doing whatever they can do to protect their $140 million dollar investment, starting quarterback Dak Prescott. The club was without offensive lineman La'el Collins all last season, and now they've started 2021 under the same circumstances. This is a team that is already thin at offensive line, and Collins is only exacerbating the problem by missing more time. Last Thursday, with Collins, the offensive line performed quite well, allowing only one sack on 58 drop backs for Prescott. The line wasn't perfect, though, and improvement is needed. That same line also allowed Prescott to be hit seven times. Is the line better without Collins? Probably not, as we would like to believe he's certainly one of the better options on the current roster. Or is he? We've seen Collins in just one game for Mike McCarthy, that game coming last Thursday night in the season opening loss to Tampa Bay. If Collins' serves his suspension that means he will have missed 21 of 22 games in the McCarthy era. Not a great start for a player who should be trying to win over a new coaching staff. If the Cowboys move on from Collins, it would have to be after June 1, via either trade or cut, when the club would only eat about $5.2 million in dead money but open up about $10 million in cap space for 2022. It is time for the Cowboys to move on from Collins? Let's discuss! Please join us daily for the Daily Blitz at CowboysSI.com, TheBlitzcast.com, or the Dallas Cowboys Blitzcast YouTube Channel. Tom Brady will always be Tom Brady. And NFL officiating will always be NFL officiating. Such was the case Thursday night as the Dallas Cowboys and Tampa Bay Buccaneers ushered in the new season, with a Buccaneers' come-from-behind win over the Cowboys, 31-29 in the final minute of the game. Presented by BetUS.com - Bet with the 3-Decade leader, BetUS! Join now for a 125% bonus or a 200% bonus with crypto. BetUS.com - https://bit.ly/DSPMediaBetUS Welcome to the Daily Blitz by DSP Media in partnership with CowboysSI.com. There were several questions answered Thursday night. 1. Dak can still play, and play at a high level, 2. The offensive line is good, even without its best feature, Zack Martin, 3. The defense is better, but still needs work in the secondary and line. One big question was raised, however: Whose fault was the loss? The Cowboys No. 1b receiver, CeeDee Lamb, dropped passes. And he dropped a lot of passes. And he dropped important passes. What's wrong with CeeDee? First-game jitters? Sophomore year slump? We'll see. Is the loss Lamb's fault? Maybe. The defensive line didn't sack Brady one single time, and he was rarely hurried by a Cowboys' defensive player. Even though Brady back pedaled into the pocket to throw the ball a ridiculous 50 times, his red, white, and pewter uniform remained clean. Is it the defense's fault? Maybe. The officiating was sketchy at best. There were missed calls all over the field at various times of the game. One thing we must remember is it's the first game for the officials too. Much like the players, they're shaking off the rust and getting back into regular season mode. But missed calls on either side of the ball can certainly impact the outcome of a game. There's no denying that. Was the missed offensive pass interference on Buccaneers' wide receiver Chris Godwin against Cowboys cornerback Jourdan Lewis the reason the Cowboys lost? One would like to think it would've been a much different outcome, but still, maybe not. Was the missed unsportsmanlike conduct call on Buccaneers linebacker Lavonte David the reason? It's hard to believe seven officials on the field all missed this. Here's the rule: NFL Rulebook, Article 9: "No player may remove his helmet while on the playing field. Doing so will result in a 15-yard Unsportsmanlike Conduct penalty. Exceptions are during timeouts and between quarters." After he tipped Dak's pass to Lamb on a third-and-six, a pass that most certainly would've been intercepted by teammate Mike Edwards, David ripped off his helmet in disgust and hammered it to the ground. That's a violation, and it went uncalled. Is that the reason the Cowboys lost? Maybe. At the end of the day, it doesn't really matter what the reason is, or if we all agree on it. What matters is the Cowboys are back, Dak is back, the NFL is back, and the Cowboys were competitive until the bitter end of the opening game against the best player ever to play the game, and the best team the league has to offer in 2021. That's what we should all be focusing on. Let's discuss! Please join us daily for the Daily Blitz at CowboysSI.com, TheBlitzcast.com, or the Dallas Cowboys Blitzcast YouTube Channel. BetUS.com - https://bit.ly/DSPMediaBetUS Welcome to the Daily Blitz by DSP Media in partnership with CowboysSI.com. It seems every season is 'the most anticipated' for Cowboys fans, and rightfully so. Cowboys fans have had to deal with 'there's always next year' syndrome for quite some time now, and 2021 is no different. For a variety of reasons, though, 2021 feels different. A Super Bowl caliber offense is paired with a brand new defense that just one season ago was one of the worst ever on record. That's all changed now. New players, new coaches, new hope. And it all starts on the road at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa Bay Thursday night on national television against the highest-profile team in the NFL right now. Questions still surround this team. How's Dak Prescott's ankle? Is Ezekiel Elliott back? Can the secondary cover anyone? Who's the best linebacker? Now, sooner than later, we'll have answers to all these questions. Let's discuss! The preseason is done. It's time to see what your 2021 Dallas Cowboys have in store for the rest of the NFL, and in particular, for the World Champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers. BetUS.com - https://bit.ly/DSPMediaBetUS Welcome to the Daily Blitz by DSP Media in partnership with CowboysSI.com. The Cowboys start the regular season with a test unlike any other they'll get all season. The World Champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Tom Brady. There are so many questions we've discussed at length about Dallas and the upcoming regular NFL season, but what about the Bucs? How is this team better or different than last season? We all remember the last game of the 2020 season in the NFL, with Tom Brady walking off a football field, his home field for that season, with another Super Bowl trophy under his belt. But their journey was not an easy one. The Bucs were 6-2 midway through 2020, in danger of missing out on an expanded postseason field. Brady and company then rattled off eight straight wins to finish the season. Tampa Bay then had to manage three road wins in the playoffs to become the first team in history to play a Super Bowl in their home stadium. We've seen the Dallas Cowboys' plan for a backup quarterback in Cooper Rush. We've seen the runners-up in Ben DiNucci and Garrett Gilbert. Welcome to the Daily Blitz by DSP Media in partnership with CowboysSI.com. Cam Newton was surprisingly released by the New England Patriots on Tuesday, beginning the Mac Jones era in Foxboro, Massachusetts. Does Cam have anything left? If he's not good enough for New England why would he be good enough for Dallas? Newton obviously struggled last season throwing for only 2,657 yards (24th in the NFL), a 65.8% completion percentage (18th), 7.2 yards per attempt (20th), and just 177.1 yards per game (34th). Add to that eight touchdowns and 10 interceptions on the year, and it's clear Newton was not his old productive self. But maybe the Cowboys don't need him to be the old Cam. Maybe they just need someone with a similar skill set to current starting quarterback Dak Prescott so the offense doesn't have to change much in a short-term situation where Newton might have to play. Maybe they just need someone who still has legs and can extend plays to keep opposing defenses honest, and who can get the ball to any one of the trio of outstanding wide receivers he has to pick from. Is Cam that guy? Let's discuss! Please join us daily for the Daily Blitz at CowboysSI.com, TheBlitzcast.com, or the Dallas Cowboys Blitzcast YouTube Channel. BetUS.com As difficult and painful as it is to talk about, the 2020 Dallas Cowboys season did happen. And for fans to appreciate where this team can go, we must also remember where they've been. Welcome to the Daily Blitz by DSP Media in partnership with CowboysSI.com. There are several questions about the 2021 Cowboys, especially on the defensive side of the ball. 2020 was a historically disappointing season for so many reasons and on so many levels. Injuries aside, the defense was just bad. And much of that can be blamed on first-year Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy. He made the coaching hires that doomed the team from the beginning. COVID-19 protocols didn't help, erasing any offseason and training camps the NFL had planned. So we set our sights the coming season, complete with an extra preseason game for the Cowboys, complete with training camp, complete with mini-camps, complete with a healthy (we think) starting quarterback, and complete with a new defensive coordinator. For all practical purposes, and for reasons stemming from averages alone, this team has to be better in 2021. But can it survive with an average defense? Will the defense be vastly improved or only marginally? Will quarterback Dak Prescott have a comeback season? Will running back Ezekiel Elliott be "2017 Zeke" or "2020 Zeke?" Will this wide receiving trio of Michael Gallup, CeeDee Lamb, and Amari Cooper make history? We make predictions. Let's discuss? BetUS.com The Dallas Cowboys play their final preseason game of 2021 on Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars. After that game come some big decisions as the roster must be cut to just 53 players. Welcome to the Daily Blitz by DSP Media in partnership with CowboysSI.com. Dallas has not only made some questionable moves over recent years at some valuable position groups, it's flat-out ignored one that has been an issue for quite some time. For a long time now, Cowboys fans have begged them to upgrade at the safety position, and the team has responded by allowing a series of six-round picks to handle up on things in the secondary. Finally, this season, under new defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, proven free agents were brought in to contribute. The Cowboys enter 2021 with a huge question mark at center on the offensive line. They had all offseason to resign Joe Looney, who started 12 games for Dallas last season, and a total of 29 games over the last three seasons. Instead, the club is relying on second-year man Tyler Biadasz for the season, with no real backup there. Never mind the fact Looney can also play guard in the event of an injury to one of the starters. Last year, the Cowboys found a clear-cut veteran backup quarterback in Andy Dalton, who proved valuable after the injury to starting quarterback Dak Prescott. Dalton is now fighting for a starting position with the Chicago Bears, and Dallas has decided to keep an inexperienced backup, whether it's Garrett Gilbert or Cooper Rush. Ben DiNucci's time seems done after another poor performance against Houston in preseason game No. 3. The Cowboys have decided to gamble at three very important spots on the roster for 2021. Will they hit big with their gamble or will the house prove the percentages to be correct? Let's discuss! BetUS.com The Dallas Cowboys arrived in Oxnard, California with just over 25-percent of their roster being comprised of rookies. Welcome to the Daily Blitz by DSP Media in partnership with CowboysSI.com. Dallas had 11 draft picks in camp joined by another 13 undrafted free agents. Clearly the Cowboys are looking anywhere they can for the next contributor on this club. Now with two preseason games in the books, the Cowboys should have a better understanding of where these 24 rookies are in their development, and who needs to go. The Cowboys have already made a few cuts, so some are already gone. But for those still here, much work is needed to be done if they expect to make the 53-man roster. From the Cowboys number one overall pick to the last man brought into camp, let's grade each rookie after two preseason games. Thanks to being a part of the Hall of Fame Game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Dallas Cowboys have a leg up on almost everyone else in the league with regard to preseason game time. Welcome to the Daily Blitz by DSP Media in partnership with CowboysSI.com. Now with two preseason games in the books, the Cowboys should have a better understanding of where they are in the talent evaluation process. Two incredibly mind-numbing wrongs were righted over the weekend, with former Cowboys safety Cliff Harris and wide receiver Drew Pearson being inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Welcome to the Daily Blitz by DSP Media in partnership with CowboysSI.com. Curiously, Pearson and Harris were the only two members of the NFL 1970's All-Decade first-team who were not already inducted into the Hall of Fame. With their induction, comes optimism from Cowboys fans that other former players will get their shot, and there is clearly a long list of Cowboys candidates. When you think about those Super Bowl teams from the 1970's, a few names come to mind that seem deserving. There are even a few from the more recent 1990's Super Bowl teams that match up well against players from other teams who are already in. Who are the greatest Cowboys players from yesteryear who we think belong in the Pro Football Hall of Fame? Let's discuss?
